a) Have understanding of the complex influences that personal, social, and cultural factors may have on teachers and learning

An essay looking at how society and socio-economic status can affect learning, and what we as teachers and the education system can do to change the current trend. 

A reflection concerning students' behaviour and how external factors may affect it. The reflection also talks about how a positive approach can be effective.

Visiting the Victorian school in MOTAT I read that it was forbidden to speak Maori in class.

Significant points in history
 

1877: Education Act: Education would be: Free, compulsory, secular

 

1914: Education Act: Secondary schooling would be free upon passing a proficiency examination

 

Introduction of technical high schools, and a division between class and education.

 

1944: The Thomas Report: Introduction of the school certificate and a core curriculum

The idea was to allow education for all and cater for all types of students.

 

1980s: Major Reform: Beginning of the Ministry of Education, Education review office, qualifications authority. Review of the curriculum.

 

2002-2004: NCEA was introduced

 

2007: Current curriculum document was published
