Year 10 Architecture
Class discussion: As part of my student choice vs teacher choice inquiry, I thought that ending the project with some honest reflection could be really beneficial. Being in the early stages of the course, I feel that now is a good time to start building rules supported by the students and creating a cohesive learning environment.
I decided to start this process with these two elements: The teacher I want to be and The teacher I need to be.
This is what my board looked like.
The teacher I want to be:
-positive
-inspiring
-able to make you comfortable in my class
The teacher I need to be:
-able to see that there is control in your learning
I explained that in order to be the teacher I want to be, I have to be the teacher I need to be. As a class we needed to decide the best balance in terms of the control of learning. Would I primarily be in control of this or the students. I have asked them to complete the evaluation as honestly as possible. It is designed to encourage them to identify situations that lead them to off task behaviour and see that things they like while learning (such as working with their friends or listening to music) can sometimes inhibit their progress.
By being transparent and having these conversations, I hope that the learners will become more accountable for their actions and take more control of their learning.
iv. assist ākonga to think critically about information and ideas and to reflect on their learning
