Year 10 Architecture
One of my favourite lessons is at the beginning of our Design in Context: Culture unit where the students learn about the Whare.
We watch this video, then take our visual diaries to the Whare where we talk about our understanding of the building's structure and the meanings found in the carvings and decoration of the both the interior and exterior. We then make observations and sketch aspects that appeal to us.
On this occasion were we lucky enough to receive a powhiri from the students studying Te Reo Maori.
This experience enriches the idea that architecture is for people and that an example like this is a product and symbol of the Maori culture.
