Andrea's Presentation focussing on scaffolding was full of ideas to support vertical and horizontal differentation.
Vertical differentiation: This is concerned with prior knowledge, curriculum levels, confidence and ability.
The reason why this is important is to allow for challenge and extension, as well as access points for all students. It should allow students to work on the edge of their proximal development (inbetween boredom and anxiety)
Horizontal Learning: This is concerned with different interests and learning styles.
The reason why this is important is to allow for diversity in the classroom and bring in student identity such as culture. Also providing student choice should increase engagement by personalising learning.
This slideshow includes how we might differentiate, using tools like Kaplan's depth and complexity catergories.
