This video echoes points made by Ken Robinson around moving education away from a model that was designed for the industrial revolution, to one that matches today's society.

In today's society we are in less need of skills such as memorising, performing routine tasks and in the near future, even driving. The qualities necessary in life are shifting dramatically.

The new 5 qualities include:

  • Curiosity- Exploring what exists and what doesn't yet. The human mind can take unexpected pathways.

  • Creativity- it's not about obtaining information, it's about what you do with it. The most creative thoughts come from when your mind is left to wonder; when you daydream.

  • Initiative- Taking action! Communicating with whoever may be relevant.

  • Multi-disciplinary thinking- 'Multi-asking', seeking the perspective of others.

  • Empathy- This develops at around the age of 5 and should continue throughout life. Empathy actually takes practice. This requires the ability to make connections.

This is part of a new 'economy'; the 'human economy'. It's about having the qualities that machines don't have. These qualities are just as important as knowledge.
