This was a workshop hosted by Kylie Merrick looking at DVC standards that can be carried out in the context of Fashion Design. Kylie shared her approach to these standards using student exemplars and showing us strategies of how to generate creativity.
Her chosen standards for Level 3 are:
3.30, 3.3, 3.26, 3.21
She has one theme for the year.
DVC 3.30 V2 (Explorative Design)
AS91627 V2- Initiate design ideas through exploration
She explained that to generate initial ideas, she would create an experience for her students. This would be a surprise. This would be the seed in which their idea would grow. Ideation is about iterations, taking the idea and extending and transforming.
Achieve: Experiences, interrogate, regenerate
Merit: Insightful (emerging train of thought that informs)
Excellence: Extension (Challenge the thinking, divergent and perceptive) Excellence is not easy (6%)!
General:
This standard is an on going one, that can come from different projects
Can be integrated with any of the internal achievement standards
Specs:
Working in individual sheets, so that is can be used from different projects, not as independent project.
Max of 60 pages (quality not quantity). Can send in digital, must be on a CD.
Must fit A3 bag.
NO GLITTER!
Avenues and strategies:
About abstraction, recombination, tessellation . Don’t forget to play . Boxes of random stuff . SCAMPER . Start teaching exploration strategies in year 10 . Start with mark making ‘using unusual techniques to gain confidence with drawing . Think of ways to show the narrative . Add to existing artist models with own interpretation. Playing with mannequin . Fast, furious and focused. No don’t need a final end product! . Untamed . Deconstruct things and then rebuild. Thinking of the materials and printing . projecting on to mannequins . Photocopying and regenerating

Her chosen standards for level 1 are:
1.30, 1.4, 1.26, 1.21
DVC 1.30
AS91063 - Produce freehand sketches to communicate own design ideas
General:
Freehand sketches: Quick sketches, 2d and 3d (no rulers) obviously
Crating and line Hierarchy
In year 11, you can make alterations to an existing commercial pattern
Body proportions: Should make their own body templates (reason is to build confidence in drawing mannequins
Achieved: Own designs, using annotations (functional and aesthetic), may reference back to the brief features
Merit: Proportions, clearly communicating how it works
Excellence: effective implementation of the design principles
In-depth Intent (in human context) how the pockets are used, human interaction
NZQA resource page: exemplars level 1. Kylee has exemplars of her students on the pages.
Her chosen standards for level 2 are:
2.30, 2.3, 2.26, 2.21
DVC 2.30
AS91337 - Use visual communication techniques to generate design ideas
General:
Using a range of different media. Sketching, modelling, mock-ups, rendering, collage, overlays (no annotation on some examples but focus is on vis com). Architecture theme for fashion design.
Achieved:Functional and aesthetic
Merit: Skilfully (Divergent)
Excellence: Effectively (Comprehensively)
