I’m Bex and I love making stuff. I love the process and the outcome. I love getting my hands dirty and normally end up staining my clothes and marking the furniture. As a child my common phrase was ‘I do it’, which drove my mum crazy, but my parents have always encouraged to try new things. Growing up I would make my friends and family gifts as well as make a mess.

I studied 3D design at the Arts University Bournemouth in the UK, which explored product, furniture and structural design. Here I developed skills in the workshop and learnt about digital making. I also learnt how to use CAD and Photoshop.

After graduating, I was lucky enough to exhibit my final major project at New designers Selection at the London Design Festival 2008. This project looked at using design such as sculpture to attract people to a historical site in my home town Dover.

During my time in London I helped out Glithero; a creative couple who allowed me to explore concepts with them using wax, ceramics and Jesmanite, and experiment with processes like blue printing. They really inspired me to expand my making repertoire and develop my skills.

In 2010 my partner and I jumped on a motorbike and headed to Barcelona. During our two years in Barcelona, I became an English language teacher and learned the basics of making and turning pots in my weekly ceramics class.

Thanks to my friends and family, I now have a range of skills that I’m willing to develop and show others. Contrary to tradition, my dad taught me how to knit. Both my parents are very handy with the sewing machine and have helped me out with my needle skills.

My brother; who is naturally good at any trade, has shown me how to paint, tile, lay paving and do basic wiring. My partner, who has a good eye for photography has helped me take a good picture or two, and there are so many other things I have learnt along the way.

After teaching in Barcelona, I realised how much I love to share what I know and see others progress and use what they’ve learnt.

So now I'm incorporating two things I love: teaching and making.

In 2014 I completed a Graduate Diploma in Secondary Teaching at the Auckland University of Technology; studying Technology, DVC, Art, Photography, Printmaking and Sculpture.

I spent my first year teaching at Taupaki Intermediate and Auckland Girls Grammar, where I learnt so much both in terms of teaching and Technology. Now I'm working for Hobsonville Point Secondary school, where I continue to learn and aim to ignite creativity in others.

This is my space to share what I’ve done. I hope you enjoy it.
